Beef/Dry Stock Manager

Rathgen Farms is a vertically and horizontally integrated, family run business.  Our operation involves dairying, large scale cropping, seed dressing and stock breeding and trading.  We take pride in all areas of our business and love producing a quality product.  We are based 20 minutes south of Timaru.

The successful candidate would manage budgeting feed allocation, animal health and pasture management.  The role involves planning and managing the herds and farm operations by evaluating the farming activities, monitoring market activities and planning production to suit the current environment.     

The following are some of the tasks included in the role;

  • Breed and raise livestock for the production of meat and as replacements for the two dairy farms

  • Be an excellent time manager and be able to work alone, but also be part of and contribute to a wider team

  • Organisation and implementation of drenching programs

  • Ensure weighing of all stock is completed regularly

  • Analyse weighing data to ensure required gains are achieved

  • Organisation and implementation of vaccinating programs

  • Complete all calf tagging, and recording

  • Monitor and maintain the health and condition of livestock

  • Manage pastures and fodder to maintain appropriate nutritional levels

  • Move livestock to optimise feed opportunities

  • Operation of the tractor and its implements

  • Maintain fences and electric fences so they have optimum power currents in use

  • Maintain water systems and troughs so stock have ready access to fresh clean water

  • Directing and overseeing general farm duties such as controlling weeds, growing pastures and fodder.
